Maruti Alto 800 vs Hyundai Eon – Budget Hatchback Space

In India, the budget hatchback space is an ever growing space. There is a strong competition in this segment and there are plenty of options to choose from. Out of the many brands and models active in the space, two of the prominent names are Maruti Alto 800 and Hyundai Eon.

The Hyundai Eon was launched in 2011, while the Maruti Alto, was launched long back in 2002.

Both the cars have a 3-cylinder engine under the hood. The 814 cc engine of the Eon generates a power of 56 bhp and a torque of 74.56 Nm. While the Alto 800 churns out only 48 bhp of power and a torque of 69 Nm. Both the cars have a five-speed manual gearbox and the power is sent to the front wheels. Alto 800 has the best-in-class fuel economy with an ARAI figure of 22.74 kmpl. The Eon has a mileage of 21 kmpl.

The Alto 800 comes in 7 petrol and 3 CNG versions whereas the Eon comes in 6 petrol and 3 LPG variants.

Coming to interiors and other features, Eon continues to have the better quality fit and finish. Though the interior space is almost similar with both cars, the fit and finish are far better in the Hyundai car. The Alto’s rear seats offer poor under thigh and back support. The Eon can easily accommodate five passengers. The dual tone beige interiors of the Eon give the vehicle an airy feeling.

The AC in the Alto is automatic where as that of the Eon is manual. There is no music system in both the cars. An engine immobilizer, an airbag for the driver, a child lock facility and fabric seats are featured in both. The Alto features power steering, power windows for the front seat, body coloured bumpers and internally operated ORVMs with turn indicators additionally.

The Alto 800 is 3395 mm in length with a wheelbase of 2360 mm while the Eon is 3495 mm in length and has a 2380 mm wheel base.

The Maruti Alto 800 is equipped with an isolated trail arm suspension and the Eon has a torsion beam axle at the rear with standard coil springs suspension system in place.

The boot size of the Maruti Alto is 117 litre which makes it the smallest. The Eon has a boot capacity of 215 litre.

Maruti Alto 800 is the most affordable one with a price tag ranging from of Rs. 2.41 to Rs. 3.53 lakh. The Hyundai Eon stands at a price of Rs. 2.87 lakh to 3.85 lakh.
